Platte Purchase Mural
Restoring a Landmark Work of Western Art
The Pony Express National Museum is proud to showcase the restored Platte Purchase Mural, a significant work by renowned artist George Gray. For more than three decades, the mural was displayed in the Pony Bar’N of the historic Hotel Robidoux, where it became a familiar and beloved part of St. Joseph’s visual history.
Through careful conservation and expert craftsmanship, the mural has been preserved and returned to its original beauty for visitors to experience once again.
PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION
The mural was professionally treated and framed by Peggy Van Witt of Van Witt Fine Art Conservation, ensuring the artwork was stabilized and preserved using museum-quality standards.
In 2018, the Questers’ Westward Gateway Chapter 1066 received an international Preservation and Restoration Grant to support the conservation of this mural along with fourteen additional framed art pieces as part of the project Preserving the Legacy of the Pony Express Museum Through Its Art. In recognition of their contributions, a horseshoe has been placed on the museum lobby Donor Wall honoring the chapter’s dedication and support.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CARE
Frame Station owner and operator Tom Duggins provided matting and installed Optium Museum Acrylic, a specialized protective glazing designed specifically for museum artwork. This ensures long-term protection while allowing visitors to view the mural with exceptional clarity.
