Preserving the Pony Express Story Through Art
Art plays a powerful role in telling the story of the Pony Express. Through preservation and restoration efforts, the Pony Express National Museum safeguards important works of art that capture the spirit, movement, and meaning of this remarkable era.
These efforts ensure that history is not only recorded, but experienced through visual storytelling that words alone cannot always convey.
PRESERVATION THROUGH PARTNERSHIP
Westward Gateway Chapter #1066 of The Questers received an International Grant to preserve and restore fourteen pieces of artwork held by the Pony Express National Museum. This project included the renowned painting The First Ride by Charles Hargens, along with works by Harry Wright and local artist Harrison Hartley.
Each piece reflects an important aspect of the Pony Express story and contributes to a fuller understanding of the riders, routes, and frontier life.
CRAFTSMANSHIP AND CARE
The restoration and preservation work was completed by Tom Duggins, owner and operator of Frame Station LLC, using the latest archival methods. His expertise ensured that each artwork was carefully restored and properly protected for long-term preservation while maintaining historical integrity.
RECOGNITION AND LEGACY
In April 2019, Westward Gateway Chapter #1066 was honored at the museum’s Volunteer Luncheon with a commemorative horseshoe placed on the Keep the Legend Kickin Wall. This recognition celebrates significant contributions to the museum’s mission and ongoing operations.
The horseshoe was unveiled during the restoration and preservation event for The Platte Purchase mural, one of the museum’s two large-scale murals.
CONTINUING THE WORK
Westward Gateway Chapter #1066, along with Pony Express Chapter #400 of The Questers, continues to support preservation efforts and hopes to fund the restoration of the remaining mural, The Missouri Swamp Fox, pending grant approval.
Regardless of future outcomes, these efforts represent a lasting commitment to preserving the Pony Express story through art, ensuring it continues to inspire future generations.
