Pumpkinfest, 15th annual family-focused festival sponsored by the pony Express National Museum, 9th and Penn Street, opens at 5 P.M. Friday October 8th and runs through Sunday, October 10th, with closing that day at 5 P.M.
Highlight of the 3-day celebration will take place at 8 P.M. Friday, October 8th, when hundreds of carved pumpkins will be electrically lit on “Pumpkin Mountain” in front of the museum.
Food will be available in Patee Park across the street from the museum throughout Pumpkinfest, as will such familiar activities as pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s games and crafts, and the carnival.
Entertainment will be almost continuous, both on stage and with roaming artists such as John the balloon man, Professor Farquar and Polecat Annie, BJ Talley, “The wandering magician,” Pony Express Reenactors performing shootouts and train robberies, and Mother Goose telling children’s tales.
On stage entertainment will include BJ Talley, magician; storytelling by Will Stuck; Mother Goose and Mysterious Musical Interlude Friday evening at 6 P.M. and 7:30 P.M.
Special appearance from “Shadows of the Old West” will feature “Huckleberry and Biscuit, the burro” and “The Ringo Kid”. They are back by popular demand from the 150th celebration April 3rd, 2010 at the Pony express national Museum. Come and enjoy the fun!
The St. Joseph Junior League will sponsor a children’s activity on Saturday and Sunday. There will be a crafts and games tent sponsored by the museum, which will open Friday 6:00-8:00 P.M. , Saturday from 12-6 P.M. and Sunday from 1 P.M. – 5 P.M.
The band “True North” will provide music on Saturday evening at 6 P.M. Suzuki Violin students will perform on Saturday at 1:30 P.M. on stage.
Festivities will begin Saturday, October 10, at 11 A.M. with the Costume Parade with awards presented for best costumes at 11:30 on the Pumpkin Stage. Registration for the parade begins at 10 A.M. at 9th and Patee Hall. Prizes will be
awarded. Grand Prize will be donated by parade sponsor Hy-Vee of St. Joseph. In case of rain the parade will take place at 3 P.M. Come see the Pumpkin Lady!
All food, craft and arts booths will be open from 5 P.M. until 9 P.M. on Friday, from 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Saturday and from noon until 5 P.M. Sunday.
